ALPHA IS COMING TO THE WEYBRIDGE DEANERY
Alpha is a transformational programme – it reaches our hearts, our faith and our Christian way of life.
What is Alpha?
It comprises a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, usually run over a number of weeks by lay leaders on behalf of a parish. Each part of the programme looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: sharing a meal, viewing a video and having a good conversation.
Alpha is for everyone; all backgrounds, all contexts, all ages. Alpha is particularly attracting many young people who are asking the question, ‘Is there more to life than this?’ It is an opportunity for us all to rediscover ourselves and take a view on our faith and our lives prompted by different perspectives and examples of transformational change where individuals are encouraged into Christianity. It is a framework for reaching out to others.....for those who are curious and it’s for all of us. Another dimension and exploration, while making new friends.
Alpha introduces communities to an initial proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ – the kerygma. As Pope Francis says, ‘Nothing is more solid, profound, secure, meaningful and wisdom-filled than that initial proclamation.’ (EG, 165). Alpha proved its success through Divine Renovation and the work of Father James Mallon in Canada.
Why is Alpha Good for Me – how does it work?
So - Alpha takes us on a journey, often leading to a personal encounter or a different relationship with Jesus Christ. It enables us to ask questions, share ideas, build friendships and experience the love of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Together.
Offering a meal is an essential part of Alpha; eating food together creates a community. Most sessions start with a meal and a chance get to know each other. In groups, we then discuss the presentation that we all view. These explore the big issues around faith, and, most importantly are designed to engage and inspire conversation.
The small groups provide the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and to build trust and friendship for the duration of the programme. The role of the host (leader) is to facilitate discussion, inviting guests to share openly and honestly their thoughts on what they have heard and seen, without any criticism or judgment. The groups often develop into small Christian communities within the parish.
How powerful is that? Join us and make new friends and hear new perspectives on faith and gain inspiration from those around us.
